The Best Skincare Tips for Before & After Yoga
So, yogis, it’s great that you’re taking the time to do yoga for your physical and mental health. But, we want to ask you to squeeze just a few more minutes out of your busy schedule to take care of your skin as well.
Just like other forms of working out, yoga causes the body to sweat, and this can impact the look and feel of your skin. The following tips are for taking care of your skin, before, during and after yoga class. And remember – these steps are even more important if you’re practicing hot yoga because your skin becomes more absorbent and sensitive.
BEFORE CLASS: Cleansing
Makeup, dirt, excess sebum, dead skin cells and sunscreen can all cause your pores to clog when you sweat. Sweating opens the pores, readily welcoming in bacteria, oil & dirt. And what do clogged pores mean? That’s right – acne.
It’s important to cleanse your skin so that sweat can escape unimpeded. So, use the Two-in-one Makeup Remover & Moisturizer for a natural cleanse before heading to the studio. Using natural ingredients is important because you want to treat your skin gently.
The only exception to the bare-faced rule is if you’re going to practice yoga outside. In that case, we recommend applying a lightweight SPF to provide sun protection, without clogging your pores.
DURING CLASS: Keep it clean
No matter how clean you face is when you begin, touching it with your hands can transfer bacteria from all manner of surfaces. Try not to touch your face with your bare hands at all.
Bring along your own clean towels for clearing away sweat. It’s a good idea to have a small one just for facial use and wash your towels after every use with fragrance free and chemical free powder to prevent irritation.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should “blot sweat from your skin … Wiping sweat off can irritate your skin, which can lead to a breakout”. So be sure to dab, not wipe!
AFTER CLASS: Cleanse & moisturize
It’s a good idea to remove your sweaty clothing as soon as you can after class, to prevent body acne. Try to shower within 30 minutes to clear away sweat from your whole body. Showering with lukewarm water is best because it will help to slow the sweating, without stripping your skin of its natural oils, as hot water can.
Cleanse your face again with Two-in-one Makeup Remover & Moisturizer just as you did before class. Your skin also needs a burst of moisture now. Luckily, because it’s dual purpose, you only have to carry around the one product. So, use one to two squirts and allow the grape seed oil and vitamin E formula to work its magic and moisturize your face.
Of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated inside and out.
Think about your hair care as well. It’s best not to wash it with any strong chemicals on the day you’re practicing yoga. When you sweat, those can easily run down your forehead and irritate your skin.
